Discover the rich tradition behind this exquisite artisan craft

Kibiso silk is a unique type of silk produced from the outer layer of silk cocoons. Unlike regular silk which is made from the inner layers of the cocoon, kibiso silk derives from the sericin-rich outer layers which are typically discarded in traditional silk production processes. Because it was difficult to process and dye, it was not used for clothing, but Nishijin-ori craftsmen (a traditional weaving technique of Kyoto) decided to use it to make a luxurious body towel, as kibiso silk is rich in sericin which has great mousiturizing effects. In this experience, participants are able to learn the actual weaving process from a master craftsman at a renowned workshop specializing in Nishijin-ori textile belts.

What to expect

In this experience, you are able to make your own original body towel by weaving it with your own hands. No special skills are required, and even beginners can feel at ease as the craftsmen will carefully teach you. Above all, interacting with the craftsmen, who are full of hospitality, will be heartwarming and transcend language barriers.
